Mobile Apps: Shifting Dynamics for a Mobile World

While advances in cellular tech and global handset proliferation continue to augment cell phone ubiquity, bustling app stores are most responsible for blurring the line between smartphone and personal computing device of choice of many.
The App Store and the Android Marketplace have been collectively growing at a rate of nearly 400 new apps per day over the past two years and will constitute a large majority of the anticipated 50 billion mobile app downloads by 2012.
At last week’s Google I/O, we caught a glimpse of Android 2.2, aka Froyo, and Nexus One owners have even been able to get up close and personal with an unofficial version since then. Faster performance, Flash 10.1, OTA updates, what’s not to love, but how will developers respond with iPhone OS 4.0 and Windows Phone 7 right around the corner?
Speaking of the iPhone, the iPad continues to shine as a the missing netbook/e-reader link; how will devices such as this one continue to influence how users consume entertainment, access data, and connect with one another? Will app developers be able to keep up with the pace of device innovation? Will users be able to forgo all other forms of tech, in favor of one singular über connective device?
