The app ecosystem hit a landmark last month, on Sept 1st Steve Jobs stated that there were more than 250,000 apps available in the Apple App Store. Today, VentureBeat reported (based on Mobclix data) that the ecosystem has made another impressive leap. In just over a month, there are now over 300,000 apps for iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad owners; 301,591 total (259,071 active/42,520 inactive*). Although over 300,000 apps have graced the app store, not all of them survive. Take a look at data we’ve gathered that showcases the ‘less glamorous’ app removals.

Highlights

  • Books have the highest number of app removals (6,193)
  • July 2010 had the highest # of app removals recorded in one month
  • The # of apps removed per month are between 4,000 & 5,000

*We use an ‘additive’ approach where we never delete applications once they’ve been approved. The reason being is that when an app gets deleted from the store, users who have downloaded that app will still have it on their device. We are working on an update to the tool that will allow users to automatically filter ‘active/inactive’ apps per category, it will be available shortly.
